Community Empowerment Collaboration at Geopark Ciletuh to Support TBP Pillars

Jakarta – PT Jamkrindo has collaborated with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) and the Sukabumi Government to share insights on community empowerment in the Ciletuh Geopark through the launch of the book titled 'Inspirasi Jamkrindo Mendukung Pilar Pertumbuhan Ekonomi Dalam Tujuan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan: Catatan Perjalanan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat Di Geopark Ciletuh’. The book was officially launched on July 1, 2021, coinciding with PT Jamkrindo’s 51st anniversary. On Monday, August 30, 2021, a Book Review event was held at Pangrango Resort, Sukabumi with the participation of several key speakers.

The key speakers included Agus Suharyono, Assistant Deputy of Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) at the Ministry of BUMN, who served as the keynote speaker, along with Iyos Somantri, Deputy Regent of Sukabumi, Sulis Usdoko, Director of Human Resources, General Affairs, and Compliance at PT Jamkrindo, and Prof. Ir. Mega Fatimah Rosana, M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Geological Engineering at Universitas Padjadjaran.

Agus Suharyono highlighted that the social and environmental activities of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMNs) have entered a new phase following the issuance of the Minister of BUMN Regulation PER-05/MBU/04/2021 on Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs. He emphasized that BUMN programs must be focused on creating tangible impact and change, rather than merely the amount of funding allocated to these programs.

“If we talk about Geoparks, the scope of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) pillars is vast. Today, we are discussing BUMN's role through Jamkrindo in economic and environmental pillars through UMKM empowerment programs and initiatives such as the anti-plastic waste campaign. Moving forward, we will see BUMN taking more important roles. This book will be a catalyst and a snowball effect,” Agus stated.

He also noted that the empowerment initiatives in Ciletuh Geopark could serve as a model for similar empowerment efforts in other regions. “What Jamkrindo has done could be a snowball effect and a lever for collaboration with other BUMNs. I am confident that, with collaboration, we will be able to achieve the SDGs more quickly and with maintained quality,” Agus added.

Iyos Somantri, Deputy Regent of Sukabumi, praised Jamkrindo's success in mobilizing various stakeholders within the Ciletuh Palabuhanratu Unesco Global Geopark (CPUGG) area through campaigns for a plastic waste-free tourist destination and uplifting the local community's welfare through empowerment. According to him, the collaboration has helped boost the competitiveness of local UMKM (micro, small, and medium enterprises) and has resulted in significant economic growth through business innovations led by the community, especially from UMKM. He encouraged other companies and BUMNs to join this effort, expanding the empowerment initiatives within Ciletuh Geopark and beyond.

Sulis Usdoko, Director of Human Resources, General Affairs, and Compliance at PT Jamkrindo, explained that the community empowerment program in Ciletuh was based on the aspirations and directions from the Ministry of BUMN, ensuring the program aligns with the Creating Shared Value (CSV) principle, which focuses on creating both economic value and social value. Therefore, in every CSR program, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remain a core focus for Jamkrindo.

“The community empowerment program in Ciletuh began with addressing environmental issues, focusing on ecosystem restoration and plastic waste management. This was followed by economic empowerment through sustainable programs that aim to improve the community's economy,” Sulis explained during the book discussion session.

Several empowerment programs were carried out, including mentoring and supporting Ikatan Homestay Ciletuh, strengthening community livestock businesses, and providing sustainable aid to the community, particularly during the pandemic. Looking ahead, there will be initiatives for waste bank management, fisheries management, and the introduction of beekeeping programs.

The success of these empowerment initiatives is attributed to the Pentahelix collaboration involving the Sukabumi Regional Government, local community leaders, Geopark Ciletuh communities, and academics. “The great support from the Ministry of BUMN and the Sukabumi Government has been crucial in driving the involvement of all community elements. The key to our empowerment strategy is ensuring that the communities around Geopark Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu are not merely passive participants but are actively engaged from the very beginning of the program, fostering a sense of ownership,” Sulis added.

Yudi Mulyadi, Chairperson of Ikatan Homestay Ciletuh, one of Jamkrindo's partners, shared that since receiving assistance and training from Jamkrindo, the homestay business has experienced significant growth. With the training provided to add value to the homestay services and the financial support for UMKM, members have improved their services, resulting in an increase in loyal visitors.

Meanwhile, Prof. Ir. Mega Fatimah Rosana, M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Geological Engineering at Universitas Padjadjaran, emphasized that the collaboration for the development of Ciletuh Geopark represents a joint breakthrough to support the sustainable Geopark ecosystem. “The Pentahelix collaboration is essential, including the role of universities in producing research for earth park areas,” she concluded.

This event underscores Jamkrindo's continued commitment to sustainable development, community empowerment, and collaboration in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
